Sanskrit (संस्कृता वाक् saṃskṛtā vāk, for short संस्कृतम् saṃskṛtam), is a historical Indo-Aryan language, one of the liturgical languages of Hinduism and Buddhism, and one of the 22 official languages of India. It is also declared as a Classical Language of India along with Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. Classical Sanskrit is the standard register as laid out in the grammar of Pāṇini, around the 4th century BCE. Its position in the cultures of South and Southeast Asia is akin to that of Latin and Greek in Europe and it has significantly influenced most modern languages of Nepal and India. The pre-Classical form of Sanskrit is known as Vedic Sanskrit, with the language of the Rigveda being the oldest and most archaic stage preserved, its oldest core dating back to as early as 1500 BCE. This qualifies Rigvedic Sanskrit as one of the oldest attestations of any Indo-Iranian language, and one of the earliest attested members of the Indo-European language family, the family which includes English and most European languages. The corpus of Sanskrit literature encompasses a rich tradition of poetry and drama as well as scientific, technical, philosophical and Hindu religious texts. Sanskrit continues to be widely used as a ceremonial language in Hindu religious rituals in the forms of hymns and mantras. Spoken Sanskrit is still in use in a few traditional institutions in India, and there are many attempts at revival. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by mguardian_north - Sun May 24 22:31:26 2009 Tamil and Sanskrit what are the origins of the languages? Q. I have heard that Tamil as well as Sanskrit both come from a language even older, it was told to me once that they then split into the languages that are know today. Does anyone have any information on this? Asked by R J - Sun Jul 5 15:53:24 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. While Sanskrit is having Central Asian origin, Tamil is believed to have originated from the South of India. In the pre-historic days, the present Australian continent was part of the Indian plateau and Tamil is said to have originated there. The mythological story of Agasthiar coming to South and started the Tamil Grammar also confirms the scientific thinking. Sanskrit has slowly lost its pre-eminet position over a period of time and Tamil continues to occupy its exalted status even today. Q. Additionally, are there similarities between the Khmer language and Finnish due to the Sanskrit connection? If you ask Khmer speakers living in Cambodia today, they insist upon a strong connection between their language and Sanskrit and Pali. Asked by sazerac - Thu Mar 15 00:00:58 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't think there are connections between Finnish and Sanskrit or Khmer, unless you would like to go back to history as far as almost beginning of time. Each of them belong to a different language family, have completely different roots for words and grammar structure.
