Nichiren (Japanese: 日蓮) (February 16, 1222 – October 13, 1282) was a Buddhist monk who lived during the Kamakura period (1185–1333) in Japan. Nichiren taught devotion to the Lotus Sutra, entitled Myōhō-Renge-Kyō in Japanese, as the exclusive means to attain enlightenment and the chanting of Nam-Myōhō-Renge-Kyō as the essential practice of the teaching. I think when you chant you tend to focus on the words that you speak and internalize it, through that you begin to free your mind and forget about these negative feelings of yours, you begin to be calm and open-minded and ready to face it with strong-willed. Also, this particular sect was not begun until much later, 715 years later. Nine other sects were established/created even before nichiren, and as with all of them, including nichiren, have been greatly diluted, distorted and influenced by persons in Japan. Even the ruling bodies have had or made influences on their version of buddhism. Buddhism, had spread into Sri Lanka, then China before it even reached Japan. So, the version that Japan had come to know, had been greatly distorted from the Dhamma that Buddha taught.
