Nichiren (Japanese: 日蓮) (February 16, 1222 – October 13, 1282) was a Buddhist monk who lived during the Kamakura period (1185–1333) in Japan. Nichiren taught devotion to the Lotus Sutra, entitled Myōhō-Renge-Kyō in Japanese, as the exclusive means to attain enlightenment and the chanting of Nam-Myōhō-Renge-Kyō as the essential practice of the teaching. Various schools with diverging interpretations of Nichiren's teachings comprise Nichiren Buddhism.

According to Nichiren Buddhism, how do you deal with depression?
Q. I understand that you chant Nam Myoho Renge Kyo but when you chant, is it like praying or do you visualize yourself becoming happier (since you'd be chanting to deal with depression)?

A. I think when you chant you tend to focus on the words that you speak and internalize it, through that you begin to free your mind and forget about these negative feelings of yours, you begin to be calm and open-minded and ready to face it with strong-willed. I believe it is a state of mind that you let go of yourself and just only think of the chant, I think it is not a prayer or something, I'm not quite sure about it, all I know it is a chant to help you focus and be with yourself.

A. I was Nichiren, and all I got out of it was that you have to chant endlessly to achieve the things you want... things that you would get anyway if you applied yourself whether you wiled away the time chanting to make it seem like time passed faster or not. ADDED: Started thinking about it and 20 years later I still can't forget!!! Myo ho ren ge kyo ho ben pon dai ni. Ni ji say son ju san mai an jo ni ki go shari-hotsu Sho bu chi ay Jin jin mur yo...

What is nichiren buddhism?
Q. What is nichiren buddhism? What do they believe in and is it a cult? Do they have a lot of members? Do they pray to the buddha statue?

A. Buddhism did not even reach Japan until well after the passing away of the Buddha, 1043 years later or 538 c.e. Also, this particular sect was not begun until much later, 715 years later. Nine other sects were established/created even before nichiren, and as with all of them, including nichiren, have been greatly diluted, distorted and influenced by persons in Japan. Even the ruling bodies have had or made influences on their version of buddhism. Buddhism, had spread into Sri Lanka, then China before it even reached Japan. So, the version that Japan had come to know, had been greatly distorted from the Dhamma that Buddha taught. Every culture, government and so on had made or influenced it in various ways, and sadly but truly much for… [cont.]
